Bonding

Dental bonding is a conservative cosmetic treatment that improves the appearance of chipped, discolored, or misshapen teeth using composite resin to repair and restore the tooth surface. At Heritage Hunt Dental in Gainesville, VA, Dr. Chris Houser and Dr. Alexis Wilson perform bonding as one of the most common single-visit cosmetic treatments in the practice.

Bonding can transform the appearance of a smile. It is commonly used for:

✓  Repairing chips and minor cracks
✓  Covering stained or discolored enamel
✓  Closing small gaps between teeth
✓  Remodeling the contours of teeth that are undersized, crooked, or misshapen
✓  Rebuilding areas where enamel erosion has taken place
✓  Creating inconspicuous, tooth-colored fillings

The Dental Bonding Procedure

The procedure begins with an exam to make sure the tooth is healthy and a good candidate for bonding. From there:

1

Surface preparation

The tooth surface is prepared and a specially formulated dental adhesive is applied, which enables the composite resin to bond to the tooth structure.

2

Shaping and color matching

The composite resin is put in place and molded to the desired shape. The resin material is carefully color-matched so the bonding is indistinguishable from natural tooth enamel.

3

Curing

Once in place, the resin is hardened with a curing light in seconds.

4

Finishing

The bonding is given a final check for fit and shape, then smoothed and polished to a natural appearance.

Why Patients Choose Bonding

Bonding is a popular choice in cosmetic dentistry because it is convenient, cost-effective, and minimally invasive:

✓  Bonding can frequently be completed in one visit, and often without the use of anesthetic.
✓  Bonding is less expensive than veneers or crowns.
✓  Unlike veneers and crowns, bonding requires little to no removal of natural tooth structure.

While veneers and crowns last longer and are less vulnerable to chipping or staining, they do require the removal of more tooth structure. Bonding is often the right first step for minor cosmetic concerns.

Dental bonding is not an option for every tooth. Major chips and cracks, deep decay, or serious misalignment might require alternative treatment. Talk to your dentist to discover whether bonding is the right choice to enhance the natural beauty of your smile. Contact our office or call (703) 754-5800 with any questions.

Is dental bonding painful?

No. Bonding requires little to no preparation of the tooth and does not require anesthesia in most cases. The process is comfortable for the majority of patients.

How long does dental bonding last?

With proper care, bonding typically lasts 5 to 10 years before touch-up or replacement. Avoid biting hard objects like ice or pen caps, which can chip the resin. Coffee, tea, and red wine can stain the resin over time.

Can bonded teeth be whitened?

Composite resin does not respond to whitening treatments the same way natural enamel does. If you plan to whiten your smile, it is better to do that first, then have bonding placed to match the new shade.

How is bonding different from veneers?

Veneers are porcelain and lab-fabricated over multiple visits; bonding uses composite resin applied and sculpted chairside in a single appointment. Veneers last longer and resist staining better but cost more and are not reversible. Learn more about porcelain veneers here.

Does insurance cover dental bonding?

When bonding is used to repair a chip or structural issue, some plans cover a portion as a restorative procedure. Purely cosmetic bonding is usually not covered. Call (703) 754-5800 to verify your benefits before your appointment.
