In-Office Whitening
The fastest route to a noticeably whiter smile. A high-concentration whitening gel is applied to your teeth in the office, sometimes with a light to accelerate activation. Results are visible the same day - typically 4 to 8 shades lighter in a single 60-90 minute appointment.
Best for: Patients who want fast results before a wedding, event, or reunion. Patients who prefer a dentist-supervised single session over a multi-week home regimen.

Custom Take-Home Trays
Custom-fitted trays made from impressions of your teeth, used with professional-strength whitening gel at home. Worn 30-60 minutes daily for 1-2 weeks. Results are gradual and often longer-lasting than in-office treatment because the process is more gradual. The trays are yours to keep and use for touch-ups.
Best for: Patients who want to whiten on their own schedule. Patients who experience sensitivity with faster in-office treatments. Anyone who wants ongoing control over their shade.

Professional Whitening vs. Store-Bought Strips
Over-the-counter whitening products work to a degree - but they are limited by law to low-concentration peroxide formulas. Professional whitening uses concentrations 3-5x stronger, customized to your teeth and supervised to avoid damaging enamel or irritating gums.

What About Tooth Sensitivity?
Sensitivity is the most common concern patients have about whitening, and it is a legitimate one. Here is what you should know:
|
✓ Before treatment: Dr. Houser reviews your dental history and checks for cavities, cracked teeth, exposed roots, or gum recession - all of which make sensitivity more likely. These are addressed before whitening begins.
✓ During treatment: Sensitivity during in-office whitening is normal and temporary - it usually resolves within 24-48 hours. Take-home trays typically cause less sensitivity because concentration is lower and application time is shorter per session.
✓ If you have sensitivity: We can use a desensitizing agent before or after treatment. Patients with chronic sensitivity often do better with the take-home option using a lower-concentration gel.
✓ Who should not whiten: Pregnant patients, patients with untreated decay or gum disease, and patients whose discoloration is from internal sources (antibiotics, trauma) rather than surface staining. We screen for all of these at consultation.
|
How Long Do Results Last?
Professional whitening results typically last 1-3 years, depending on diet and lifestyle habits. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco are the main culprits for re-staining. Patients who do periodic touch-ups (a few nights with the take-home tray every 6-12 months) maintain their results much longer.

Teeth Whitening FAQs
Does teeth whitening work on crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening agents only work on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, bonding, and fillings will not lighten. If you have restorations on visible front teeth, whitening your natural teeth may create a noticeable color mismatch. Dr. Houser will review this at your consultation.
|
Can whitening damage tooth enamel?
When done professionally and correctly, teeth whitening does not damage enamel. Problems arise from overuse of high-concentration products without supervision or whitening over existing decay. That is why we screen patients before treatment and do not recommend whitening more frequently than needed.
|
How white will my teeth get?
Results depend on the original shade of your teeth and the cause of discoloration. Surface stains from coffee, tea, and wine respond very well. Yellow-toned teeth generally whiten more than grey-toned teeth. Natural teeth have a ceiling - no whitening treatment can make teeth unnaturally bright, and results vary by individual.
|
Does insurance cover teeth whitening?
Cosmetic teeth whitening is typically not covered by dental insurance. However, CareCredit financing is available through our office if you would like to spread the cost over several months. Call (703) 754-5800 for current pricing.
